I discovered this is not the case. The speed of the storage has a major impact on compression speed, as I illustrate below. This defaults to multi-pass compression with a data rate of 9, kbps using the H. The only change I made during these tests was to compare single-pass compression vs.

Answer: a lot! Other codecs and multi-pass compression are done exclusively in software, which is much slower. Youtube, and other social media, presets all output H. In short, if you compress a variety of different source codecs, 4.

If you export exclusively in ProRes , it should be faster. I suspect I ran the 4. Version 4. The speed of your storage makes a BIG difference in how fast files compress. For example, with ProRes in multi-pass mode, which is the default setting:.

I ran both these speed tests twice, because the differences were so dramatic. I was very surprised with these results. Strangely, the default setting for YouTube compression uses multi-pass mode. In fact:. This increase in file size contradicts what I used to believe: that multi-pass took longer but created smaller files with higher quality.

Neither of these seem to be true. First, because single-pass mode uses hardware to accelerate compression, which is vastly faster than software compression alone. Second, the high bit rate of the YouTube setting yields great quality, regardless of single vs. If Apple is using multi-pass mode to improve image quality, changing the bit-rate to about 12, kbps, while setting compression to single-pass mode would generate files of about the same size in less than half the time, with equal or better image quality.

NOTE : You can change the default YouTube setting from multi-pass to single-pass in the Inspector, after selecting the compression setting applied to a clip. For fastest performance with highest quality for YouTube or any social media site accepting H. Data rates for personal websites should be set lower. In all cases, though, single-pass compression will be faster.

I have mixed feelings about this update. The speed improvements for some codecs are faster, but not in every case. The hardware you use to store source files will absolutely affect compression speed. If Compressor works for you, great.

Is it same or NTSC? However the color space between and is virtually the same, so you could leave it at Compressor 4. My older version of Compressor loaded an MPEG2 file almost instantly but with the new version it takes at least 3 minutes for the file to load and allow me to change settings and begin the conversion process. It is a big pain. I use a MacPro Thanks for letting us know. Too many things are slower or awkward under the hood. I am disappointed in the latest version 4. However, as I am not familaiar with Compressor I am wondering if the problems are due to that rather than shortcomings with the applications?

The Geometry tab controls the size of your final, compressed image. The default setting for this window creates an image which is x , which is wrong for just about everything. My recommendation is to create all your videos at x or smaller. In this case, you select the image size you want from the Dimensions popup menu. To create a different image size, select it from the Dimension popup menu. NOTE : Adjusting Cropping , at the top, allows you to remove elements from your image, exactly as we would do in our video editing software.

When you are happy with your settings, click Save at the bottom. You can modify these settings at any time, by selecting the preset in the Settings window, which reloads it into the Inspector.

Your newly-created setting now appears in the Custom folder inside the Settings window. To apply it to a clip, drag the setting from the Setting window and drop it on top of the video you want to compress in the Task window at the top.

Before you spend time compressing your complete video, make a point to create a short test movie. The hardest part of any video to compress is where the action is moving. Movement is far harder to compress than stillness. So, in your movie, find a second section where things are moving AND you care about image quality.

Then, apply your compression setting and compress the short segment. You can also move the In and Out by dragging their icons. Because this test clip is short, it will compress quickly, allowing you to check image and audio quality without wasting a lot of time. This also allows you to see that your settings are correct and the final compressed version looks great.

Once you are happy with the look of the short test movie, drag the In to the far left and the Out to the far right to select the entire movie.

To start compression, click Submit in the lower right corner of the Task Window, then click Submit again when the smaller window appears. Compressor, the application, is only a front-end to a background process. Compressor does not need to be running for you to compress a file.

Video compression is central to all the videos we create. Pick a video compression program that meets your needs and spend time learning it. Creating great-looking video is an essential skill today. I have tried Compressor, through the Youtube setting and I left it for 12 hours and it kept jumping up higher with out much process. I have tried it through Quicktime conversation as well and it got stuck once and saved it at exactly 70GB again.

Larry, Question on Compressor 4. The old Compressor had this setting under Compression Type when you are doing a custom preset under video; it was this xEncoder. Compressor 4. This is a problem because the file size is way too big. Do I go with H. This video is going to be on Vimeo. If not, is there a way to get the xEncoder for my version of Compressor 4. I am just looking for a good quality video so it can go to Vimeo. I edited two videos and combined them to form a 8 minute clip.

I have to save the file as a mpeg, as this is the only format our program will read the video is to be displayed on a transit bus screen. I need the file size to be 70 MB, it is currently saving at a , KB. What are your suggestions to save this is a compressed format without risking the resolution? When I save as a MP4, my quality is effected.

Thank You! Your compressed file is MUCH!! I think I need to use compressor 4 in order to rectify a video file wmv where the audio is gradually going out of sync against the video file.

Premiere is a good choice. Then, recompress the audio file only and change the sample rate. If it WAS If it WAS 48 kHz, change it to Next, reimport the converted audio file into Premiere and sync it with the video file.

This should fix the drifting sync issue. Basically what Im needing to do is convert a 2 gb video to under mb. ProRes is a bit codec. So, to compress an 8-bit file, select an 8-bit codec. A 2 GB file is very small, as video goes. Using the standard YouTube compression settings for either p or p should get you the file size you want. In the webinars we do, like yours, the videos are dropped into a Keynote presentation.

Do you have any suggestions on best compression settings to use for these webinars? If you are playing the videos to an audience inside GoToWebinar, it will never work. GTW messes with frame rates which generally end up around 10 fps. That being said, compression settings depend upon frame size, frame rate and whether they are being viewed on mobile or desktop devices. I have given up playing video through GotoWebinar, it is not designed for video playback to an audience.

No, because there would be way too much opportunity for someone who did not know the software well to accidentally delete a master file. But can you recommend a good video compressor for windows?
